Touch Screens have become more and more popular every day but not many of us know the way it works. The touch screens work by recognizing the touch and later incorporate them into actions. So here is how the touch screen works.

There are three basic touch screen technologies that are used. They are:

• Resistive
• Surface acoustic wave
• Capacitive

Resistive Technology: This consists of a normal glass panel that is composed of several layers. There are two layers of thin, metallic, electrically conductive layers that are separated by a narrow gap. These two layers are held apart by spacers, and a scratch-resistant layer is placed on top of the whole setup. When a user touches the screen, the two layers become connected at that exact spot. There is a change in the electrical field and it is noted by the computer to calculate the coordinates of the point of contact. Once the coordinates are know a special driver is used to translate the touch into a language that the Operating system can understand.  This is very similar to the mouse click or drag. Resistive touch screen panels are generally more affordable but offer only 75% clarity and the layer can be damaged by sharp objects but are not affected by outside elements such as dust or water.

Surface Acoustic Wave Technology: As the name suggests this technique makes use of the ultrasonic waves in sending and receiving signals. These waves pass over the touch screen panel. There are two transducers where one receives and one sends. These are placed along the x and y axis of the monitor’s glass plate. There are also reflectors that are placed on the glass that are used to reflect an electrical signal sent from one transducer to the other. When the panel is touched, a portion of the wave is absorbed. This change in the wave marks the position of touch event and sends the information to be processed. Surface wave touch screen panels are the most advanced of the three types, but they can be damaged by outside elements.

Capacitive Sensing Technology: In this system, the touch screen panel is coated with a material that stores electrical charges. Since the human body is a conductor a small amount of charge is dispersed to the user and the charge in the capacitive layer decreases. Circuits located at each corner of the panel measure the charge and send the information to the controller for processing. Capacitive touch screen panels must be touched with a finger but the resistive and surface wave panels use fingers and stylus combined.

There is a lot of talk going around in India regarding the security issues relating to BlackBerry smart phones. The government on its part wants Research in Motion (the makers of BlackBerry) to allow it to monitor messages while RIM maintains it doesn’t exercise control over the message encryption with its smart phones. This has snowballed into a major issue between the government and RIM and put the fate of 1 million BlackBerry users in India on a seesaw.

As this has become the talk of the town many are left wondering what this issue is all about. Let us find out what are the issues that the Government and RIM are concerned about.

• Under the present circumstance SMS and Email sent through Blackberry phones cannot be monitored. It is based on a symmetric key system created by the customer. Indian cyber policing can monitor each and every phone call, Email and SMS sent through normal network. This has made these phones a hot favorite among terrorists and anti-nationals.
• BlackBerry users can simply make an encrypted call the other person’s unique four character number. Since these calls cannot be decoded by the intelligence agencies they have become a concern for the government. Normal calls over a GSM, CDMA or other wired or wireless network can easily be intercepted.
• The high level of encryption on data transfers is ideal for the corporate users but is a huge threat to the country as data sent over this network cannot be intercepted. RIM has so far cashed on the ‘total security’ that it has given to its customers on data transfer, revoking that might lead to business losses.
• The BlackBerry smartphone’s servers are based in Canada where the high level encryptions take place which is almost impossible to crack. The Indian security agencies want access to these servers which is not acceptable to RIM. The government wants the company to move its servers to India.
• The mobile service providers are in a fix as they have the legal responsibility in India to ensure security agencies can access all services. State owned BSNL, MTNL and private telecom providers like Airtel and Vodafone offer BlackBerry services in the country. They will have to accept government’s stand on the security issue.
• India is not the only country which is having concerns over the use of BlackBerry handsets. United Arab Emirates has decided to ban BlackBerry messenger, email and web browsing from October 11. More countries like Indonesia, Kuwait and Egypt are contemplating a ban against Research in Motion’s BlackBerry service.
• One of the major concerns for RIM giving into the demands of the government is the question of ‘privacy’. The BlackBerry handsets are used by the elites among the mobile users in India for whom the question of ‘privacy’ is of major concern. Business deals have happened on the phone due to its highly encrypted security feature.

The Indian government seems to be not willing to give an inch to RIM when it comes to question of security of the country where as RIM on its part doesn’t want to disappoint its customers. A likely solution would be for RIM to move its servers to India and let the intelligence agencies have access to the information considering India is one the fastest growing mobile markets in the world.
